At the season’s last round, the team has revealed who will fulfill their rookie driver duties in Formula One.

Lewis Hamilton will not be competing in Formula One at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix; instead, Mercedes has stated that Frederik Vesti will do so.

It comes after the 21-year-old filled in for George Russell during the Mexico City Grand Prix, completing the second of two FP1 rookie sessions that teams are required to complete in a season.

Vesti will continue to work for Mercedes and take part in the season-ending test in Abu Dhabi the week after the Grand Prix.

Vesti to dovetail Mercedes drive with F2 commitments

“A new chapter in my career will be driving in Formula One in Abu Dhabi. It was a significant time for me to attend my first official session over an F1 weekend in Mexico,” Vesti remarked.

“I gained a lot of knowledge and enjoyed working with Lewis and George as well as supporting the team. Building on that experience at Yas Marina is something I’m excited about.

“It’s a track I know well and that will no doubt make it easier to get up to speed in the one hour of practice. I’m extremely excited to get back behind-the-wheel of the W14 for FP1 and then the post-season test. Once again, I want to say a big thank you to the team for giving me this opportunity.”

Vesti will be competing in the Formula 2 championship season finale in addition to his FP1 commitments. Currently, he is 25 points behind leader and Sauber Academy driver Theo Pourchaire in the standings.
