Max Verstappen issues damning response after being investigated for chaotic end to Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Verstappen was under investigation for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Max Verstappen is being investigated by the stewards following a dramatic ending to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Oscar Piastri won the race in Baku despite wild circumstances on the last lap that included the deployment of a virtual safety car (VSC) as a result of a collision involving Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez.

After the incident, both men were called to the stewards, and Sainz collided with Perez as the Mexican tried to overtake the Ferrari driver in the battle for second place with Charles Leclerc.

George Russell of Mercedes moved up to the podium positions as a result of the crash, and Max Verstappen lost ground to Lando Norris, his title opponent, to finish in fifth place.

Things could have gone from bad to worse for Verstappen, who complained about his Red Bull car during the race, after it was confirmed he was under investigation from the stewards.

Verstappen was under the magnifying glass for allegedly breaking the rules during the virtual safety car after the chequered flag had been waved. It was alleged he overtook other drivers which is forbidden during a yellow flag.

Nico Hulkenberg, Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon also reported to the stewards for the same reason.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton said over the radio: “Hulkenberg passed me under the yellow flag.”

Max Verstappen is at Risk to lose his 5th place finish. If he gets a 10 second penalty l, Fernando Alonso will go to P5 and Verstappen P6 Championship back on!

Verstappen admitted he was surprised by the investigation and claimed he did not break any rules.

The Red Bull driver told Sky: “To be honest, I did not pass under the virtual safety car, we crossed the line, the race was finished.

“There’s a lot of examples in the past and this year as well where we have all done exactly the same thing. So for me, I’m a bit surprised.”

The investigation has now concluded with Verstappen being handed a warning for his actions as confirmed by the FIA.

Their statement reads: “The driver overtook other cars after the chequered flag, but while a VSC was still being displayed, following the crash at Turn 2. The driver was reminded that while passing after the chequered flag is not unusual, it is prohibited in the case of yellows, safety car or virtual safety car procedures. While the drivers were aware of where the incident was, they could not have known if emergency equipment or marshals were being dispatched onto the track, and so have to proceed with caution. The Stewards are aware that this has happened earlier this season and was not noticed at the time. We are therefore warning the driver concerned, along with all other competitors. Further breaches may incur significant penalties.”

Piastri’s victory and Norris’ incredible comeback after a nightmare in qualifying means McLaren have overtaken Red Bull in the constructors championship for the first time in two years.

Verstappen currently holds a 59-point lead over Norris in the drivers championship heading into the next race in Singapore.
