A quarterback who accessed the transfer site recently Starting for the Nebraska Cornhuskers this week is Jeff Sims.

With their backup quarterback accessing the transfer portal on Friday, the Auburn Tigers showed how much they still love to trade quarterbacks. After spending two seasons with the Tigers, backup quarterback and 2022 starter Robby Ashford will sign up for the transfer portal, according to On3 Sports.

One of the most recent quarterbacks to access the transfer site is Ashford. This week’s Portal users include Jeff Sims, a starter for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and Maalik Murphy, a former quarterback for the Texas Longhorns.

Robby Ashford: Leaving the Tigers as a Two-Time Transfer

Ashford spent his first two seasons as an Oregon Duck before moving to Auburn. He is regarded as one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the class of 2020. In 12 games during the 2022 season, the six-foot-four, 225-pound gunslinger passed for 1,613 yards and seven touchdowns against seven picks. He ran for 710 yards and seven touchdowns on 79% of his passes. In a late-October game against the highly-regarded Arkansas Razorbacks, he had his best performance, rushing 19 times for 87 yards and throwing for 285 yards and one touchdown. Ashford trailed only running back Tank Bigsby in yards gained on the ground, but he led the Tigers in passing yards and touchdowns.

However, the Auburn Tigers added Michigan State Spartans transfer Payton Thorne in 2023, regulating Ashford to a backup role. Ashford attempted just 27 passes this season, throwing for 145 yards, two touchdowns, and two picks. He ran for 217 yards and five scores. 

Auburn Tigers: QB Depth Chart for 2024 Season

Quarterback Payton Thorne will be back as the starting quarterback in 2024, barring a transfer portal entry of his own. In 12 games this season, he passed for 15 touchdowns against nine interceptions. Thorne played for the Michigan State Spartans for his first three seasons, during which he passed for 8,172 yards and 49 touchdowns in the passing game.

Holden Geriner, a redshirt freshman, is another member of the Tigers’ roster. After signing with the Auburn Tigers in 2021, the once four-star prospect has only completed 12 passes during his collegiate career. One of the best signal-callers in the incoming class, Walker White, is a four-star prospect who Hugh Freeze’s team is also expecting to join them in the fall.
