Points Deductions: Premier League titles taken away? Penalties for FFP as Blues await investigation’s conclusion

The Premier League punished Everton ten points deduction last week, and now everyone is waiting to see how the inquiry into the champions’ purported FFP guideline violation turns out.

The Premier League’s confirmation that Everton has been punished 10 points has raised more concerns than it has answers regarding the potential punishment (or punishments) that Manchester City may face.

On Friday, the Toffees were immediately docked 10 points for violating the Premier League’s financial regulations following their guilty verdict. According to Premier League regulations, teams can lose up to £105 million over a three-year period. An impartial commission concluded that Everton had losses of £124.5 million for the 2021–2022 season.

The only thing protecting Sean Dyche’s team from the bottom of the standings is goal differential as they have now dropped from 14th to 19th. It is anticipated that a decision will be made before the end of this season, as Everton has announced they will appeal the ruling.

The Premier League’s largest-ever points loss, totaling ten, has left everyone waiting to see what will happen with City’s Financial Fair Play [FFP] probe. In February of last year, City was accused of breaking numerous financial regulations that went back to the 2009–10 season.

The Premier League statement said: “In accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today referred a number of alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules by Manchester City Football Club (Club) to a Commission under Premier League Rule W.3.4.

The statement listed said breaches with five separate points made on the rulings, adding: “Commissions are independent of the Premier League and member clubs. The members of the Commission will be appointed by the independent Chair of the Premier League Judicial Panel in accordance with Premier League Rules W.19, W.20 and W.26.

“In compliance with Premier League Rule W.82, the Commission’s proceedings will be private and confidential. The Commission’s final decision will be made public on the Premier League website in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.2. Premier League Rule W.82.1 is followed in making this confirmation. Until further notice, the Premier League will not be commenting on this issue further.”

It’s been said that City is unlikely to lose its Premier League titles, even though they could receive harsh punishment for the charges. Since the 2009–10 season, the Blues have won England’s premier division seven times, including the last three seasons.

But it doesn’t seem likely that they will be taken from them, as Miguel Delaney of the Independent acknowledges that those involved in the case don’t think the punishment will be “backwards.”
