ANALYSIS: The reasons why McLaren’s new Mercedes power unit agreement made sense for everyone involved

By extending their agreement with Mercedes until 2030, McLaren has taken a step toward assuring their power unit future. F1 Correspondent Lawrence Barretto examines the rationale behind their decision to want stability.

For a while now, McLaren has been considering their options for power units for 2026 and beyond. This was due in part to the announcements that Ford would be joining Red Bull Powertrains in Formula One, Audi would be forming a works team with Sauber and deciding to develop a new power unit starting in 2026, and Honda would be returning as a full-fledged supplier by forming a works team with Aston Martin.
