Todd Beam, the director of media relations for the Detroit Red Wings, texted David Perron early on Sunday morning with some news that he would have rather not heard.

With a gesture toward Beam, Perron said, “This guy Beamer texted me in the afternoon that I was two away from 300 (NHL goals).” “He normally texts me about all the milestones, but I don’t like to hear about it.

In a 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Sunday, Perron ended up with both goals. Both were coming from the left faceoff circle in a similar manner—one timers on the power play.

Perron remarked, “I’m glad it’s over now so we can move forward and hopefully keep adding.”

Coach Derek Lalonde of Detroit is happy that Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman decided to sign Stanley Cup winner Perron as a UFA in the summer of 2022.

Lalonde described Perron as “he drives us in that he has such a passion to win.” “I don’t think I’ve ever worked with a player that was more competitive.

He was someone we really, truly needed, and it has to do with where we are as an organization and the steps we’re attempting to take. He continues to challenge himself inside the group. An enormous plus.

Red Wings Gostisbehere Goes For Four

Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere of Detroit was involved in all four goals in the team’s victory, scoring one empty-net goal and providing three assists. He was matching his career highs in assists and points while accomplishing this. He has 18 points in 19 games this season after collecting 1-5-6 totals in the last two outings.

Since Moritz Seider did it against the Winnipeg Jets on January 10, Gostisbehere is the first defenseman for the Red Wings to record a four-point performance.

Lalonde praised Gostisbehere, saying, “I’ve been so impressed with him with his overall five on five game.” “You truly appreciate what a player brings when you finally get him on a daily basis.”

Ice Chips

Alex Lyon stopped 37-of-38 shots to earn his second consecutive victory. Lyon is 2-1-0 with a 1.35 goals-against average, a .952 save percentage and one shutout in three starts to begin his Red Wings tenure . . . Detroit is 9-1-0 when leading after two periods, and 6-1-0 when doing so on home ice.

On the 24th anniversary of Yzerman being the 11th player in NHL history to achieve 600 goals, Perron scored his 300th goal. The NHL was founded in 1917, and that anniversary fell on Sunday as well. From 1927 to 1930, Reg Noble, the final original NHL player still playing in the league, captained Detroit.
