Nebraska Cornhuskers’ Quarterback to Officially Enter Transfer Portal with New Transfers Looming, What’s Offers Has He Got Out There?

This offseason, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have been actively searching the transfer portal for a new quarterback. As a result, Georgia Tech first-year transfer Jeff Sims has made his way onto the portal. Sims only had meaningful playing time in three Nebraska games this season as a result of a high turnover rate and injuries. Even though Sims only attempted 47 throws this season, he still had a 12.7% interception rate with six interceptions.

This year, Sims struggled to hold onto the football as well; of the 28 drives he led, 39% ended in a turnover in which he was involved. Against Deion Sanders’ Colorado, in one of the Cornhuskers’ most eagerly awaited games of the season Buffaloes, Sims’ four turnovers stymied a stellar first-half performance from the Husker defense.

The Nebraska coaching staff gave Sims a lot of praise throughout the preseason as their first transfer portal recruit under head coach Matt Rhule. Sims’ jersey number, which is only one digit, represents this because Rhule and the team vote to choose the “toughest” players on the team who they believe should have that jersey number. The Nebraska Cornhuskers players had nothing but positive things to say about him and his demeanor in the locker room, despite his tendency to make mistakes. Even though the former Yellow jackets were having a terrible season, running back Gabe Ervin gave credit to his approach in a mid-season piece from The Athletic.

“I feel like Jeff is really good mentally,” Ervin said. “When things are going bad, it’s so easy to fold and have a sad face and everything. But that dude right there, he’s going to keep on coming. He’s going to act like nothing happened, because that’s what you need to do.”

Sims only had one touchdown pass with the Huskers, on a play in which he also recovered a fumble, but it was his play during his first three years at Georgia Tech that initially drew the interest of Rhule and colleagues. During his tenure at Georgia Tech, Sims completed 23 interceptions while throwing for 30 touchdowns. In addition, he amassed over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground while rushing.

The former four-star recruit has never played a full season in his college career as he only managed to play in 29 games in his four seasons. His most active season was his freshman year, where he played in 10 games and threw a career-high 13 touchdowns. Sims earned a lot of praise in his freshman year as he beat Florida State in Mike Norvell’s debut, as well as a ranked Pitt team early on.

Upon Sims injuries and inconsistent play, Nebraska tried to replace the Georgia Tech-transfer with backup quarterbacks Heinrich Haarberg and Chubba Purdy. Haarberg led the team with 967 yards passing, but he completed just 49% of his passes, and was plagued by turnover issues as well. Purdy was the clear replacement, but he only started two games and still managed to throw three interceptions.

Nebraska has visited quarterbacks Blake Shapen of Baylor, Will Howard of Kansas State, Cam Ward of Washington State, and most famously, Kyle McCord of Ohio State, as they have publicly searched the transfer portal for new quarterbacks. Although McCord’s repeated interceptions against the Michigan Wolverines drew criticism from Buckeye supporters, his 24 passing touchdowns this season would set a record for the Huskers.
