Breaking: Following Patrick Mahomes’ remarks, the Kansas City Chiefs may choose to hire an emergency coach for the playoffs.

In addition to obtaining free agency assistance at the offensive lineman or pass-catching spots, the Kansas City Chiefs may have more options to boost their offense in time for the postseason. After the Chiefs’ Christmas Day loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, a few of their starting offensive lineman are injured.

This season, the Chiefs’ wide receiver offense woes have been well reported. In 2023, the Chiefs had 26 dropped passes, which led the league. Some Chiefs supporters attribute the team’s offensive issues to Matt Nagy.

Before taking a job as head coach of the Chicago Bears in 2018, Nagy served as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2016 to 2017. He remained there until the 2021 season, when he was let go. In 2022, Nagy was the quarterbacks coach for the Chiefs.

In an attempt to strengthen his CV and land a head coaching position, he took back the position of offensive coordinator this past offseason after Eric Bieniemy left to join the Washington Commanders. After Week 18, the Commanders are about to fire head coach Ron Rivera. (This season’s Commanders’ problems are not Bieniemy’s fault.)

Mike Florio with NBC Sports thinks the Chiefs could make a literal splash hire for the playoffs by adding Bieniemy once he’s been relieved of his offensive coordinator duties in Washington. Patrick Mahomes has hinted recently he misses his former offensive coordinator:

“First, the Commanders would have to fire Bieniemy. If/when they move on from coach Ron Rivera, the Commanders could choose to hold other members of the staff in place, until the next coach decides whether to keep him. If that doesn’t happen, and if Bieniemy is relieved of his duties, he’d be free and clear to join any other team for the playoff run.

Why not return to the Chiefs? Quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently explained that Bieniemy brought an accountability that the team is missing. “I think Coach Bieniemy set that standard when he was here,” Mahomes said.”

If Bieniemy is still available for the playoffs, the Chiefs should now think about employing him. Bringing back a major player of their previous two Super Bowl winning teams would not be a loss for them. With a few weeks remaining in the regular season and it obvious that the offense isn’t getting better, they do stand to lose a great deal by continuing with Nagy.

This January, the Chiefs will play in the AFC against formidable defenses. Just before Week 17, the NFL MVP front-runner was forced to throw four interceptions by the Ravens, who lead the AFC standings. Rather than relying on a string of miraculous plays to salvage the season, head coach Andy Reid’s actual secret may be Bieniemy.
