The Washington Commanders are preventing Eric Bieniemy from joining the Kansas City Chiefs’ staff in time for the postseason. This week, the Chiefs will take on the Miami Dolphins in the Wild Card round.
There are no postseason games scheduled for the Commanders. After the Commanders’ 4-13 season in 2023, head coach Ron Rivera was sacked by the team on Monday morning. After Rivera was fired, there was some hope within the Chiefs fan base that they may bring in former Kansas City offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
The Kansas City Chiefs need an offensive spark
Under Matt Nagy, the Chiefs offensive coordinator, the offence has not performed well this season. According to documents from GH Media, NBC Sports’ Mike Florio suggested in December that Bieniemy might play postseason football with the Chiefs:
Once Bieniemy is released from his offensive coordinator position in Washington, Mike Florio of NBC Sports believes the Chiefs may make a real big hire for the postseason by bringing him in. Recently, Patrick Mahomes made it clear that he misses his previous offensive coordinator:
“First, Bieniemy would have to be fired by the Commanders. The Commanders have the option to retain other staff members until the next coach makes the decision about whether to retain coach Ron Rivera, should they decide to part ways with him. In the event that it doesn’t, Bieniemy will be free to play for any other team in the playoffs and will be liberated of his responsibilities.
How about going back to the Chiefs? According to QB Patrick Mahomes, Bieniemy introduced an accountability that the team was lacking. Mahomes remarked, “I believe Coach Bieniemy established that benchmark while he was here.””
The Kansas City Chiefs are getting blocked by the Commanders
For the Chiefs to have a chance to sign Bieniemy, the Commanders would need to perform well. In the wake of Rivera’s dismissal on Monday, Bieniemy is still expected to carry out his responsibilities with the Commanders.
Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano claims that Bieniemy won’t be let go from his position in Washington very soon. Josh Harris, the team’s owner, stated on Monday that he intends to retain the Commanders assistant coaches on staff until a head of football operations is hired.
Bieniemy can remain in Washington for the foreseeable future at the Commanders’ absolute discretion. Bieniemy might end up being invited for an interview to fill the position of head coach.
For a few days or a week, the Chiefs will have to endure the scenario in Washington. To get the appointment of their next head coach started as soon as possible, the Commanders will need to appoint a head of football operations.
Until then, Bieniemy will not be travelling to Kansas City to play a similar role in the Super Bowl like Vic Fangio did with the Philadelphia Eagles. Furthermore, it most likely won’t happen in time for him to make a significant impact on the Chiefs’ game against the Dolphins.
Nagy must stay with the Chiefs for at least one more week.
