On Wednesday, Nebraska formally announces the hiring of its new assistant.
Glenn Thomas, a former assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, officially joined Nebraska on Wednesday. Thomas will work as a co-offensive coordinator alongside Marcus Satterfield and coach the quarterback position.
In a statement announcing the appointment, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said, “Glenn Thomas has a history of success throughout his coaching career, and I look forward to him being a part of the Nebraska football program.” “Glenn has shown himself to be an excellent quarterback developer, and his experience in both college and the NFL is a valuable asset to our coaching staff.”
Satterfield will not only coordinate but also handle tight ends. Josh Martin, who filled in as Bob Wager’s temporary tight ends coach the previous season, will return to his role as an analyst for the 2024 season.
Prior to that, Thomas spent five seasons working with Rhule at both Temple and Baylor. Thomas assisted with the growth of Baylor’s Charlie Brewer and Temple quarterback P.J. Walker during their assignments.
With 10 seasons spent as a coordinator, Thomas has 15 years of total experience coaching at the collegiate level. Having served on NFL teams for eight complete seasons, he had a significant impact on the growth of NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Ryan.
Thomas released a statement saying, “I am honored for the opportunity to join a tradition-rich football program at the University of Nebraska.” “I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Coach Rhule and his amazing staff at Nebraska. I have had the good fortune to work for him in the past. I’m eager to visit Lincoln and go to work with the Husker offense.”
Thomas served as Arizona State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022 before moving to Pittsburgh for the 2023 season. With 1,192 yards and 16 touchdowns, Xavier Valladay set the 10th-best rushing record in school history under his direction. Trenton Bourget, one of ASU’s quarterbacks, also broke the school record for single-season completion percentage (71.4%) while playing for Thomas.
Thomas worked as UNLV’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2020 to 21 before joining Arizona State. During that period, he assisted in leading the Rebels to a number of historic victories, such as assisting running back Charles Williams break the program’s career rushing record and be named to the Mountain West All-Star team. Throughout his two seasons at UNLV, Thomas made contributions to the growth of the Mountain West Freshman of the Year award. Wide receiver Kyle Williams won the prize in 2020, while quarterback Cameron Friel won it in 2021. Friel connected on 62.4 percent of his passes, shattering the school record for a freshman’s season completion percentage.
Thomas worked under Rhule at Baylor and Temple for the previous five seasons. From 2017 to 2019, Thomas served as Baylor’s co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, helping to revolutionize the program. The Bears finished 11-2, were ranked No. 7, and played in the Sugar Bowl in 2019. Quarterback Charlie Brewer became one of the best in school history during Thomas’ three years at Waco. He threw 69 touchdowns in three seasons and was selected as a semifinalist for the 2019 Davey O’Brien Award.
Thomas will be in charge of a Husker quarterback room that in January welcomed Daniel Kaelin and Dylan Raiola, two players selected in the Elite 11.
Thomas’s salary will be disclosed once he has successfully completed the formal hiring process at the University.
