The Jacksonville Jaguars were among the NFL’s most disappointing teams at the end of the 2023 season, which led to several coaching staff changes in January. Doug Pederson, the head coach, chose to keep Press Taylor as the offensive coordinator.

As a head coach, Pederson has consistently shown loyalty to his coaches, even during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. Pederson was dismissed and kicked out of the NFL until taking a job as head coach of Jacksonville after the Eagles front management pushed him to make adjustments but he refused.

In 2022, Taylor—who had previously worked for Pederson as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator in Philadelphia—joined the Jaguars as the offensive coordinator. Taylor now has a lot of control over the offense for Jacksonville thanks to the head coach’s influence.

As of 2023, the Jacksonville Jaguars offense ranks 14th with 22.2 points per game, 16th with 5.2 yards per play, and 17th with 38.16% third-down conversion rate.

Pederson retained Taylor as a member of the Jaguars coaching staff after the 2023 season, despite the offense’s stark underperformance in comparison to expectations. The offensive currently appears to be a point of concern in Jacksonville, with no indication that it would change, at least not in terms of play-calling.

In the latter weeks of the regular season, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reports that there was “some buzz” in Jacksonville over Trent Baalke, the general manager of the Jaguars, and the front office’s close examination of the team’s offensive shortcomings under Taylor.

For the 2024 season, Jacksonville is dedicated to Pederson and Taylor; yet, the head coach of Jacksonville appears to be making the same choices he did in Philadelphia. Larger changes might be made in 2025 if the Jaguars do poorly in 2024 due to Trevor Lawrence’s underwhelming performance and Taylor’s offense failing to live up to expectations.
