The Nebraska Cornhuskers’ game against the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday afternoon can be summed up in one word: embarrassing. As the Terps won 73-51 at home, NU was outrebounded, outhustled, and just outplayed.

The Huskers’ travel woes continued as they dropped their fifth straight Big Ten road game, dropping them to 15-6 overall and 5-5 in the conference.

This season, NU’s road losses against Maryland have had recurring elements that we have seen. NU gave up 17 points as a result of turning the ball over 17 times. The Huskers also allowed an astonishing 17 offensive rebounds, which translated into 18 Maryland points, and were dreadfully outrebounded 43 to 25. Despite having comparable shooting percentages, the Terrapins were able to take 21 more shots than the Big Reds because of their inability to correct mistakes.

The afternoon’s most intriguing feature is that Nebraska wasn’t necessarily in control from tip to Buzzer. Five minutes into the game, the Big Red led 12-2 thanks to a strong start. From there, things just got worse. Nebraska’s offence was caught off guard by Maryland’s full court press, which put pressure on the Huskers and resulted in several turnovers. Additionally, Maryland’s offence started to click. After NU’s ferocious start, the Terrapins outscored Nebraska 42–15 thanks to their efficient ball movement, ability to get to the hoop anytime they wanted, and dominance on the offensive glass.

It was a non-competitive second half. With 14 minutes remaining, Maryland had already extended their lead to 25 after launching into a 13-5 run. The rest of the way, NU never got closer than eighteen points to Maryland.

Nebraska women’s basketball’s next game comes against Wisconsin, the current Big Ten leaders, so they will need to heal quickly and get back on the saddle. Luckily for NU, the game is scheduled for Thursday, February 1st, at 7:30 p.m. CST at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
