The Seattle Seahawks signed cornerback Lance Boykin to a Reserve/Future contract, marking the team’s first action under new head coach Mike Macdonald. Although he was on the Seahawks practice squad the previous season, the 23-year-old defender only appeared in one game.
Defensive back Lance Boykin was the first player signed by the Seahawks after hiring new coach Mike Macdonald, according to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson in a message posted on X on February 1, 2024.
Not surprisingly, given that he led the Baltimore Ravens to become the top-ranked NFL team in 2023, Macdonald is starting the game on defense. The Seahawks defense gave up 23.6 points per game, while the Ravens allowed a league-high 16.2 points per game.
Seahawks News: Corner Lance Boykin Could Be a Receiver Disruptor Due to His 6-Foot-2 Size
Boykin will still compete for a spot on the squad during training camp, but under Macdonald, he might be a sleeper to watch. Boykin’s rights are preserved by the Seahawks under a Reserve/Future contract, which also stops him from talking to other teams.
Coming out of Coastal Carolina, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound corner went undrafted in 2023. Boykin was characterized by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein as a “cornerback with the size and length to disrupt the catch point” before to the selection.
In his pre-draft evaluation of the cornerback, Zierlein described him as “long-legged, linear with the size and length to disrupt the catch point, but he lacks the athletic fluidity and short-area twitch to get there on time.” Boykin has the necessary long speed to stop burners from flying past him and will find it difficult to maintain contact with NFL route runners in a man defender role.
“He has the physical attributes that could have teams trying him as a safety, and he’ll need to play in a zone-based cover scheme.”
