Scandal Erupts on Kirk Herbstreit Sparks Outrage with Push to Flip Top Recruit’s Commitment to Nebraska

College recruits celebrated National Signing Day on Wednesday. Raiola, a former Nebraska player whose son Dylan just started there, spoke with Adam Gorney on Rivals’ Signing Day program on Wednesday. Dylan is considered the best quarterback available in the 2024 recruiting class and is rated as a five-star recruit. He moved to Nebraska over two months ago, but he had previously committed to Georgia.

The elder Raiola talked about the reasons behind his son Dylan’s decision to transfer from Georgia to Nebraska during the conversation. Dominic stated that Dylan felt compelled to assist Nebraska in regaining its reputation. According to Dominic, a 1997–2000 Nebraska player, college football is better when Nebraska is doing well. Herbstreit seems to think the same thing.

Dominic particularly mentioned that Dylan’s decision to join the Cornhuskers was influenced by a phone call he received from Herbstreit.

“When it happened, I’ll bring up a guy’s name. His name is Kirk Herbstreit. When he saw Dylan’s smoke distracting Nebraska, he called me. He said, ‘Dude, is this for real?'” [Dylan] has to do that He has to do it.’ [Herbstreit’s] interest in Nebraska for a guy like that to tell me and get behind me. Like I knew, I knew [Dylan] had to do it. But I’m not going to sit here and say, “You have to change this place or be a part of changing it.” “So when Kirk told me that, man. I had other coaches reach out to me and say, ‘This place is special.’ Coach (Matt) Rhule is a special leader. It just turned into something really nice at the end of the game. day and we’re really proud of [Dylan’s] decision,” Raiola said..

Fans who just heard that footage were incensed with Herbstreit, even though Dominic made it plain in his interview that his son had been seriously considering moving from Georgia to Nebraska on his own. Many took it to suggest that ESPN commentator Herbstreit was against Georgia, against the SEC, against recruiting, and worse.

Even though Herbstreit may have meant well, this does not speak well of him. As Dominic Raiola noted, he is a very powerful voice in the college football scene. It is detrimental to his capacity to be objective on the air for him to become involved in any manner with a recruit’s choice.
