Kirk Herbstreit offered his version of events regarding his conversation with Dylan Raiola’s father.

Earlier this week, on National Signing Day, college football programs nationwide completed the selection of their 2024 recruiting class. The Nebraska football team is one that performed admirably. Although the Cornhuskers have been in difficulties for some time, Matt Rhule’s class of recruits may indicate that they may soon turn things around. After finishing with the nation’s 18th class, Dylan Raiola, a five-star quarterback who transferred from Georgia to Nebraska, was signed.

Dylan Raiola’s father spoke with Kirk Herbstreit over the phone about the circumstances back when Dylan was going through his recruitment. Raiola was a Georgia fan, but his father—a hero in Nebraska football—was enquiring about Matt Rhule and Nebraska football via Herbstreit. Drama ensued from the whole affair, but Herbstreit recently offered his side of the tale when he appeared on The Paul Finebaum Show.

“I have a question for you or anyone else: if someone asks you, ‘What are your thoughts on Matt Rhule?’ and you agree with him, should you respond, ‘Matt Rhule is a bad guy, Matt Rhule is an idiot, or Matt Rhule is a bad coach?'” said Herbstreit. “Or perhaps you say, ‘I enjoy Matt Rhule.'” Matt Rhule works as a good coach’?”

Many speculated that Raiola’s decision to switch his commitment from Georgia to Nebraska was influenced by his conversation with Herbstreit. Herbstreit continued by saying that he had never advised anyone to avoid traveling to Georgia or anything like.

Herbstreit went on, “Of course, I didn’t sell Nebraska and try to tell anybody not to go to Georgia.” That is the most absurd thing that someone could do. Well, I did give Matt Rhule some props. If my statement is any indication of my guilt, it is that I think Matt Rhule, a decent man and coach, will lead Nebraska back to success, just as he did with Temple and Baylor.

Dylan’s father, Dominic Raiola, related what he said about Nebraska with Herbstreit. Here is his story.

Raiola stated, “[Herbstreit] called me when he saw the smoke about Dylan entertaining Nebraska.” “Dude, is this true?” he exclaimed. It must be done by him. His fondness for Nebraska, for such a guy, to inform me and support me. I realized he had to take action. However, I wasn’t going to stand here and tell you to go change that location or help change it. Kirk then informed me that… Other instructors have gotten in touch with me and said that the location is unique. Matt Rhule, the coach, is a unique leader.

We do know that Dylan Raiola will play football for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but who knows what actually happened? The Cornhuskers, led by Matt Rhule, finished 5-7 last season, but they have a lot of talent returning and are beginning to assemble a stronger roster. This team’s next objective is to return to a bowl game and then contend for Big Ten crowns.
