The type of quarterback the Las Vegas Raiders intend to add this summer is unknown, but head coach Antonio Pierce has stated that the position is open to additions. The team is expected to focus on the draft, with some speculating that they may select a quarterback with their first-round pick.
But a lot of clubs that select before the Raiders at No. 13 also need a quarterback. Las Vegas may take a look at options later in the selection if they are unable to choose the quarterback they want in the first round. Former South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler is one of the more intriguing prospects this year. The Raiders are the team that would most suit the 23-year-old quarterback, according to Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder.
Holder stated in a blog published on February 7 that “Las Vegas is widely expected to target a signal-caller in the draft, but it will be out of range for one of the top three quarterbacks in this year’s class with the No. 13 pick.” “Trading up is an option, but the Raiders might want to draft Rattler and allow him to challenge [Aidan] O’Connell for the starting position during training camp.
The former Gamecock’s arm talent has never really been a problem, so he should be able to carry out Getsy’s vertical passing game. Although the Oklahoma transfer isn’t a strong runner, he can tote the rock occasionally and finished college with 410 rushing yards—including yards lost to sacks.
Holder also believes that the Raiders made the most sense for Rattler if he hopes to play.
“As a projected middle- to late-round pick, heading to Sin City could be Rattler’s best opportunity to get early playing time,” he added.
Spencer Rattler Was Once Favorite to Be No. 1 Pick
Spencer Rattler’s time in college has been anything but smooth. Once upon a time, he was among college football’s fastest emerging talents. Lincoln Riley, who had already had two quarterbacks selected as first overall picks, started him at quarterback for Oklahoma. He was the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy and to be selected first overall in the 2022 NFL Draft going into 2021.
But he didn’t play well, thus Calvin Williams started on the bench instead of him. Rattler ended up spending two more years in college and transferring to South Carolina as a result. The quarterback experienced humility from that, and he has recovered well. As the MVP of this year’s Senior Bowl, he is beginning to garner more NFL attention.
Spencer Rattler has the talent to be a successful NFL quarterback, but he is far too dangerous to select in the first two rounds. Rattler is predicted by both Pro Football Network and Draft Wire to be selected in the third round.
That would be low enough that taking a chance on him wouldn’t need too much of an investment. After the pre-draft process concludes, he might potentially earn a pick in the second round. Among the players to watch out for this offseason is this one. It only takes one quarterback to fall in love with Rattler—many clubs are in dire need of a quarterback this offseason. Whether the Raiders are that team is still up in the air.
