With a $45 million salary, Trevor Bauer was the highest paid player in baseball in 2022. He’s currently attempting to get a minimum-wage job in MLB.
Bauer is willing to take MLB’s lowest pay of $740,000 (plus incentives), having served the longest domestic violence suspension in baseball history (194 games). Nevertheless, no team has signed Bauer as of yet, despite “seven or eight” teams still in contact with his representatives, led by baseball agent/attorney Jon Fetterolf.
Fetterolf stated, “Money isn’t the focus of this.” “In actuality, all he’s searching for is a chance and an opportunity.”
According to Fetterolf, Bauer knows that any signing team would be taking “a PR hit,” which is why he has a standing offer to rejoin the Yokohama Bay Stars, where he went 10-4 with a 2.76 ERA and no reported concerns. Fetterolf also said, “You can get rid of him at the minimum,” in case something goes wrong.
Although the original 324-game MLB sentence was subsequently shortened by an impartial arbiter, Bauer fiercely contested the charges and the ban, claiming he had done nothing wrong. This suspension was the longest in MLB history due to domestic abuse regulations. He’s now attempting to repair his reputation.
It’s a mixed jobs record overall for players returning from such suspensions. But Bauer, who’s expressed remorse for the ordeal in recent interviews, may be hurt, too, by a previous reputation for arrogance. Many were able to resume MLB careers after serving suspensions, some have had to move their careers overseas. 
Fetterolf expressed his belief that the man had exhausted all options. “This man is not accused of any crimes. He was suspended, to be sure, but he served his time.
Bauer is the extreme example, of course, with the longest ban weighed against a past Cy Young winner’s skill — it’s a production vs. publicity ratio. A year ago, a higher-ranking team member informed me that in order to hire Bauer, “you’d have to be from another planet.” A few executives have expressed that he might require an additional year in Japan.
However, given the desperate need for pitching skill, some find it strange that no one has accepted his offer up until now.
