Joel Klatt is completely in favor of Caleb Williams being selected as this year’s first overall choice.

Following the Super Bowl, the well-liked FOX commentator released his first mock draft of the cycle on Wednesday. Klatt cited Williams’s lineage from USC and his time as an Oklahoma star as the reason he was ranked first overall because he is the closest thing to Patrick Mahomes in college football.

In fact, Klatt thinks Williams is more polished than Mahomes right out of college in several aspects. Considering that Mahomes recently won his third Super Bowl championship with the Kansas City Chiefs, that is quite a statement:

“It is impossible to ignore Caleb Williams’ potential. This guy has been the most similar college football player since Patrick Mahomes for the past two years, according to Klatt. “And he’s better in college in many aspects and even more polished than Mahomes was at Texas Tech,” the statement reads.

Klatt outlined how Williams’ primary skills, such as his ability to produce outside of the pocket and throw on the run, are similar to some of Mahomes’ outstanding qualities. Unsurprisingly, Williams is still the favorite at ESPN Bet based on odds, and sports bettors may follow and profit from the most recent odds by using SDS’s recommended sports betting apps.

For the Chicago Bears, one topic of conversation is Justin Fields’ current status with respect to his rookie deal. Klatt claims that one of the reasons the Bears would be better suited starting Williams as a rookie is that Fields will likely need a new contract shortly.

“Why not reset the clock on the rookie contract? I believe it to be more advantageous than anything else, so you have to take that into consideration when comparing a player like Justin Fields to a guy like Caleb Williams,” Klatt said. “So, the main reason I believe Chicago should proceed is because of that.”
