Breaking News:Ohio State has officially signed UCLA coach Chip Kelly as its new…

Chip Kelly

On Friday night, Ohio State made the announcement that Chip Kelly, the head coach of UCLA, will be joining them as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.

Kelly takes over for Bill O’Brien, who Boston College announced as its new head coach on Friday.

In a press statement, Ryan Day stated, “We are very excited to have Chip and his wife, Jill, joining our programme.” “His background as an NFL head coach, at UCLA, Oregon, and elsewhere will be immediately beneficial to our whole squad. I can’t wait to get back in touch with Chip, introduce him to our squad and staff, and work with him to win a championship.

“I also want to wish Boston College’s new coach, Bill O’Brien, and his family the best of luck.”

Kelly and Ohio State are going to sign a three-year contract. The contract’s financial specifics were not immediately made public.
Kelly rejoins Ryan Day, the head coach at Ohio State, after coaching Day at New Hampshire, when Kelly served as the offensive coordinator while Day was a quarterback. In the NFL, Day collaborated with Kelly while serving as the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2016, both of which Kelly led.

Kelly will now work for Day, accepting his first position as an assistant coach after serving as Oregon’s offensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008.

During his four years in the NFL, Kelly coached the Eagles for one season and the 49ers for one before taking a year off from coaching to work as an ESPN analyst. Kelly returned to college in 2018 as the head coach of UCLA. Kelly was the head coach of Oregon from 2009 to 2012 and called the offensive plays for a team that ranked in the top five nationally in both total and scoring offence in each of his final three years with the Ducks.

In each of UCLA’s final three Westwood seasons, the Bruins won at least eight games. However, Kelly appeared to be looking to leave UCLA throughout the past month, as he conducted interviews for many NFL teams’ offensive coordinator positions. Kelly made the decision to step back from head coaching and go to Ohio State from UCLA even if his dream of an NFL position never came true.

Former UCLA offensive coordinator Justin Frye, who served on Kelly’s first four coaching staffs before departing to take a position as Ohio State’s offensive line coach in 2022, will also be joining Kelly’s offensive coaching staff.

Kelly told UCLA on Friday morning that he would be departing the Bruins, and the university officially stated on Friday that it had already launched a nationwide search for a new head coach.

“We need to have the right leader in place to position the programme to compete at the highest level for our student-athletes, fans, and university as we continue to prepare for our move to the Big Ten Conference later this year,” stated UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond. “We are certain that we will identify a leader who upholds our True Bruin Values and develops young men both on and off the pitch.”

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reports that Jarmond informed the UCLA football squad that he plans to make an announcement by Tuesday.
