Xavier Legette had an outstanding football season in 2023 with the South Carolina Gamecocks.

With figures only surpassed by Alshon Jeffery in 2010, the Mullins, South Carolina native used his fifth year of eligibility to establish himself as one of the best wide receivers to play for the Gamecocks in history. Legette caught 71 passes for 1255 yards and seven scores on his way to being named a unanimous All-SEC selection as well as a couple All-American selections.

According to a press statement from the University of South Carolina this week, Xavier Legette’s efforts have made him the Blanchard-Rogers Trophy winner for 2023.

The Blanchard-Rogers Trophy honors two South Carolina natives who were Heisman Trophy winners: Felix “Doc” Blanchard of McColl, South Carolina, who won the award in 1945 at Army, and George Rogers, who won it in 1980 at USC. The award is given annually to the best college football player in the state. Occasionally, the award is referred to as the “South Carolina Heisman.”

Since 2013, the Blanchard-Rogers Trophy has been given out every season; nevertheless, Legette is only the second South Carolina football player to receive the award, with Kevin Harris receiving it in 2020. The only other winners who did not attend college in the Palmetto State are Mason Rudolph (Oklahoma State, 2017) and Jalin Hyatt (Tennessee, 2022). Other South Carolina-based players who have won the award include Tajh Boyd (2013), Vic Beasley (2014), Deshaun Watson (2015–2016), Travis Etienne (2018), and Trevor Lawrence (2019).

Legette is expected to be selected highly in the NFL Draft in April. With his size and quickness, he has been expected to go anywhere from the late first to the third round, and NFL teams are thrilled about what he can develop into at the next level.
