So far in 2023–2024, South Carolina basketball has surprised everyone the most. The Gamecocks’ 11–21 campaign from the previous year, which tied a franchise record for losses, was baked in with the SEC media’s last-place prediction this offseason.

It appears to be among the worst offseason picks in the past few seasons.

The Gamecocks led by Lamont Paris will not only not finish last in the Southeastern Conference, but they will also have a chance to win the regular season championship. With five games remaining, Carolina is tied for third place with the Auburn Tigers, two games behind first place. Ten days ago, USC was leading the race, and as of right now, they are guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

One cannot ignore the job that Coach Paris has accomplished. The South Carolina basketball head coach should be proud of his coaching effort this season after combining exceptional transfer portal recruiting (bringing in Ta’Lon Cooper, BJ Mack, Myles Stute, and Stephen Clark) with strong developing efforts, a strong freshman recruiting class, and some advancements in his own in-game coaching.

It should come as no surprise that Lamont Paris is getting a lot of positive attention for his work this year from the national media. Although it appears that Paris will win SEC Coach of the Year, he may also win a bigger prize.

It was announced on Friday that Lamont Paris had been named to the watch list for the Naismith National Coach of the Year Award. Paris is one of the fifteen coaches that are under observation. He is joined by Hubert Davis (North Carolina Tar Heels), Bryce Drew (Grand Canyon Antelopes), Anthony Grant (Dayton Flyers), Dan Hurley (UConn Huskies), Nate Oats (Alabama Crimson Tide), TJ Otzelberger (Iowa State Cyclones), Matt Painter (Purdue Boilermakers), Bruce Pearl (Auburn Tigers), Richard Pitino (New Mexico Lobos), Mark Pope (BYU Cougars), Kelvin Sampson (Houston Cougars), Josh Schertz (Indiana State Sycamores), Kyle Smith (Washington State Cougars), and Danny Sprinkle (Utah State Aggies).
