Hector Gomez of MLB Insiders reports that Jose DeLeon, a former pitcher who played for the Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates, passed away.
He was sixty-three.
Gomez announced DeLeon’s passing on X, the former Twitter, following a fight with the disease.
In the third round of the 1979 draft, the Pirates selected the right-hander.
He joined the Pirates in 1983 and played for them through 1986, when he made his Major League debut.
In addition to spending time with the Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, and Montreal Expos during his final season in 1995, he was a member of the Phillies from 1992 to 1993.
In 1989, DeLeon had the most strikeouts in the National League.
His record was 86-119 with a 3.76 ERA, 1,594 strikeouts.
