He has been linked to rugby union.
The standout player for the Sydney Roosters and the New Zealand Kiwis has acknowledged that he would probably depart the team at the conclusion of the 2024 NRL season.
Although Manu’s coach, Trent Robinson, has always stated that the Roosters are confident in keeping him, there have been rumors in the last few weeks and months that the star center will play the 15-man game next year somewhere in the world.
His management is rumored to have held talks with clubs in France and Japan. Although the offer would surpass what the Roosters could offer, it might not be greater than what another NRL team, such as the St George Illawarra Dragons, who have made an official approach for Manu, could provide.
Despite this, Manu acknowledged to The Sydney Morning Herald during the Roosters’ season-opening victory over the Brisbane Broncos in Las Vegas on Sunday (Australian time) that he is probably going to retire from the game, but he stopped short of confirming it.
“Probably,” Manu responded.
“Since anything might happen at any time, I really don’t want to affirm anything. Many of those decisions are still being made by me. I’m still working on organizing stuff. However, Trent Robinson’s coach, Robbo, has been fantastic.
He’s been understanding and only wants what’s best for me. All I want is what’s best for the Roosters, my family, and me. Not sure yet, really. Though it’s still uncertain, I’m hoping to set up a few things. I just want to hit the nail on the head and move on to the season.
Manu has previously stated that he would never want to play against the Roosters, despite the fact that he could make seven figures at other NRL teams and wear the number one jersey.
That would imply that until James Tedesco retires, the center who wants to play fullback is forced to play in the three-quarters.
Tedesco’s play against the Broncos in Las Vegas says otherwise, although that was looking closer by the game based on previous year’s form.
Tedesco has already acknowledged that, given the Roosters’ possibilities at the back, he is open to moving into the halves. However, that also looks out of the question now that Luke Keary has re-signed until at least the end of 2025 and Sam Walker is also guaranteed a starting position.
Still, Manu declared it was time for a fresh challenge.
He remarked, “I just love the challenge of being uncomfortable.”
“I really believe that facing challenges is the best way to develop both personally and as a player. Not that I’m not being tested in this situation. But I haven’t visited this place in a long. I’ve been there for a while, rusted into place. Maybe just picking up a brand-new game. Simply said, something new and immersive as well.
Until at least the conclusion of the 2024 season, the outstanding center will continue to hold down a berth in the Roosters’ all-star backline.
