Ex-Top 5 Overall Pick Emerging as Potential WR Target for Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver prospects appear to be a bust or a winner in the free agent market following a frenzy of wide receiver trades and signings on March 14. Corey Davis, on the other hand, is a different potential target who might mesh well with the Steelers.
Although Davis, 29, announced his retirement from the NFL in August 2023, ESPN’s Field Yates revealed on March 14 that Davis had submitted an application to be reinstated. Yates stated that Davis’ release by the New York Jets was anticipated.
The Jets terminated Davis, according to a report from SNY’s John Flanagan, less than three hours after Davis tweeted. Although New York left open the prospect of signing the 29-year-old again, several Steelers writers have suggested Pittsburgh as a potential backup if the Jets decide not to re-sign Davis.
His playing style fits the Steelers’ needs. Davis also has a strong connection to Pittsburgh’s new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
The Tennessee Titans selected Davis with the fifth overall pick in 2017 to start his career. Smith was Tennessee’s tight ends coach at the time.
In 2019, Smith was appointed as the offensive coordinator for the Titans. With Smith calling plays for him, Davis enjoyed two of his best statistical seasons.
In six NFL seasons, Davis has totaled 273 catches for 3,879 yards and 17 touchdowns
