What Dawn Staley said about Sahnya Jah entering the transfer portal

Before using the transfer portal earlier this week, Sahnya Jah was a part of the South Carolina women’s basketball team for less than a year.

That doesn’t alter Dawn Staley, the coach of USC,’s feelings toward her. Staley made her first media appearance after Jah officially entered her name in the transfer portal on Monday. “Once you’re part of our family, you’ll always be part of our family,” she said on Thursday before the NCAA Tournament. Jah, a Virginia native and former four-star recruit, was a freshman who had not been with the team since February 8. Jah’s status would remain day-to-day going forward, according to a USC announcement made that day, stating that she will be “out indefinitely due to conduct detrimental to the team.”

Staley would not say why Jah had been penalized in particular. Following that suspension, Jah did not play for South Carolina in a game, nor did he travel to away games with the Gamecocks or practice with the team. She played in 16 games during her time at USC, averaging 9.1 minutes and 3.1 points per contest when she came off the bench.

On Monday, Jah officially joined the portal. In a statement that afternoon, Staley said that although Jah’s tenure with the school was brief, it was “unfortunate,” and she and USC wished the departing transfer “the best in the next steps of her career.” Staley provided more details on their remarks on Thursday. “Best wishes to her,” Staley murmured. She has given me permission to assist her in the process of locating a new school that will accept her and fulfill her needs.

Cooper chose to transfer after the portal window closed, despite having committed to Tennessee, and is sitting out this season as a redshirt.
