Shining in his comeback from a shoulder injury, Gausman ends Blue Jays spring training by striking out seven in three innings; Romano is probably going to the injured list before Thursday’s opener.
On Monday in Bradenton, Florida, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the visiting Blue Jays 4-3 thanks to Jake Lamb’s game-winning two-run RBI single in the fifth inning. This ended Toronto ace Kevin Gausman’s strong spring training start.
Lamb’s hit broke the tie at two runs, and the Blue Jays’ lone reply was an RBI single by Daniel Vogelbach in the eighth inning, which left the score at one.
In three innings of work for Toronto (13–17), Gausman struck out seven and gave up just one run on three hits in his first Grapefruit League start since returning from a shoulder injury. Zach Pop (0-1) took the loss in relief.
Ryder Ryan (1-2) earned the win for Pittsburgh (13-16) although he pitched just 1/3 of an inning. Wily Peralta earned the save.
The Blue Jays concluded their pre-season with four straight losses.
Toronto starts the regular-season schedule on Thursday when they play the Rays in a four-game series in Tampa, Fla.
