Breaking News: South Carolina Gamecocks Lose Another Star Player…

CBS News/Columbia, S.C. Only a few days after leading the Gamecocks to their first NCAA Tournament berth in seven years, leading scorer for South Carolina, Meechie Johnson, is registering on the transfer site.

Cleveland native Johnson, a 6-foot-2 junior, stated on social media on Monday that he is also thinking about “testing the NBA Draft waters.”

Johnson, a two-season transfer to the Gamecocks, averaged 13.8 points this season, contributing to the team’s rise to prominence in college basketball.

In the first season under new coach Lamont Paris, South Carolina finished 11–21, but its 26–8 record tied a club record for wins.

In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the sixth-seeded Gamecocks were defeated 87-73 by the 11th-seeded Oregon team on Thursday.

“Coach Paris has been very impactful in my life and my development and that is my guy forever,” Johnson said in her thank you to the program and the institution. Having stated that, I’m going to use the transfer portal.
