Matt Rhule, the head coach of the Nebraska football team, spoke with the media on Thursday after spring practice and covered a wide range of subjects. He provided information on injuries and the status of players from the previous season. Given that Nebraska has a bright future at quarterback, a lot of the questions focused on quarterback play.

The future is here  for Nebraska Football at quarterback

Any notion that the rookie quarterbacks for Nebraska football would gradually ramp up during spring practice has been swiftly dispelled. Dylan Raiola and Daniel Kaelin, according to Rhule, will be in a position to start for the team by the end of spring training.

Since they came on college, both quarterbacks have generated a lot of noise. It seems that due to their talent and necessity, they will soon be in places where they can truly make an impact. It’s unclear how Glenn Thomas’s presence will contribute to such hopes. Thomas has a proven track record of developing quarterbacks, so he will have plenty of resources at his disposal.

This is certainly an optimistic statement from Rhule. Nevertheless, it shows how much this team believes in the young talent they have. It also shows that they have clearly defined roles for the future. Again, it all comes back to development. That part will be key. The future is very much here.

An extra year of eligibility on the way?

DeShon Singleton has not returned for practice. Rhule has appealed for Singleton to get another year of eligibility in the process.

Singleton was out for the final three months of the 2023 season, and his absence was certainly felt at the safety spot. He suffered his injury against Michigan last year and several players had to step up in order to fill the safety spot.

The safety position will be dependent on his health. Phelan Sanford is no longer involved in the initiative.Omar Brown has also vanished. After sitting out the first eight games of the season in 2023, Marques Buford Jr. performed admirably when given the chance. The unit will benefit greatly from having Singleton back and in good health. A potential additional year of eligibility would be significant as well, given the ongoing development of some of the younger safety alternatives.

Johnson continues to impress

After suffering numerous injuries at the running back position during the previous season, Rhule commended Emmett Johnson’s development.

Johnson finished the previous season with 90 carries for 411 yards and two touchdowns. On November 11, against Maryland, he produced his best work. In that game, he had 17 carries for 84 yards.

Early in the season, running back injuries plagued Nebraska football. Johnson had to step up as a result. He performed admirably, and it seems that the coaching staff is taking a serious interest in him. According to Luke Mullen’s transcription of Rhule’s remarks, Johnson was among the guys who showed improvement in terms of analytics this spring.
