A former Auburn cornerback has transferred to Houston, and Hugh Freeze believes this wide receiver is a “home run,” according to today’s Auburn Tigers News.
The Auburn football team didn’t have too many losses to the transfer portal over the offseason with most of their production being lost to the NFL Draft. 22 Tigers hit the transfer portal following the 2023 season, and earlier this week another one found their transfer destination.
According to Matt Zenitz, former Auburn cornerback JD Rhym is expected to transfer to Houston and reunite with former Auburn football coach Zac Etheridge, who currently coaches the Cougars’ defensive backs.
Rhym was a member of the Tigers’ recruiting class of 2022, and spent two seasons on the Plains during which he racked up 20 total tackles, one interception, and two passes deflected.
Hugh Freeze thinks this WR is a ‘home run’
Restructuring the wide receiver position group was one of head coach Hugh Freeze’s and his staff’s top priorities this offseason. Despite the fact that the team has struggled to produce in recent seasons, newcomers such as five-star incoming freshmen and experienced transfers are anticipated to turn that around this year.
KeAndre Lambert-Smith, one of the transfers, committed to the Auburn Tigers two weeks ago and was widely considered the top wide receiver in the transfer portal. In a position group full of young talent, Freeze views the addition of a highly productive receiver with four years of experience as a major accomplishment.
“You get a guy that has the experience that Dre has at the Power Five level to combine with those young kids I thought was a home run for us,” Free freeze told Auburn Rivals. Since I’ve been here, you guys have been here. That room needed to be rearranged. Sometimes, I detest stating things that way. However, we had to alter that room in order to accomplish our goals.”
