The feelings around the South Carolina baseball program have shifted in a major way in the past week.

Heading into last weekend’s series against the rival Georgia Bulldogs, the Gamecocks had just beaten the top-5 Kentucky Wildcats and the Missouri Tigers in back-to-back series and were just inside the Regional host line according to projections from D1Baseball.

However, after an embarrassing sweep at home to UGA (the first SEC road series win for the Bulldogs since 2022 and the Gamecocks’ first SEC home sweep since 2019), things are not looking so good.

In fact, with a road series upcoming against the #1-ranked Tennessee Volunteers, the hope for a #1 seed has transformed into realistic doubt surrounding USC’s chances of making the NCAA Tournament at all. Another 3-game sweep at the hands of the Vols (a real possibility if things don’t go well in Knoxville) would mean Carolina was on a 6-game losing streak heading into the SEC Tournament in Hoover, a place they historically play poorly.

On Wednesday morning, some more bad news broke for Mark Kingston and his team as right-handed pitcher Peyton Rogers announced he has decommitted from the South Carolina baseball 2024 recruiting class.

In Rogers’ decommitment message on social media, he offered no details behind his decision, only thanking the Gamecock staff for the opportunity and revealing that he would be “reopening [his] recruiting for other opportunities.” Rogers was the Region VI 4A Co-Player of the Year, 4A Pitcher of the Year, and an All-State selection this season for West Florence High School.

The current state of the team’s 2024 postseason outlook and the unsure nature of Mark Kingston’s job status surely aren’t helping the Gamecocks’ recruiting efforts, and if the Gamecocks miss the postseason and/or Kingston is let go, Rogers will not be the only casualty from Carolina’s commitment list.
