According to court documents obtained by the Tampa Bay Times, Auburn running back Brian Battie may suffer “permanent paralysis” following a fatal shooting in his hometown of Sarasota, Florida.

On May 18, Battie was shot during an incident that resulted in the death of his brother Tommie Battie, 24, at the site. Brian was taken to the hospital and is still there in critical condition. Battie is on a ventilator as a result of a setback in his recuperation, as Auburn coach Hugh Freeze previously disclosed.

At the SEC spring meetings, Freeze told reporters, “He’s getting better.” I don’t want to discuss too much in order to respect the family, but they do appreciate all of the prayers, for sure. The whole family has been going through a tough period, but he appears to be improving every day.”

Darryl Brookins, the suspect, turned himself in to Sarasota County deputies and is currently being held. Brookins faced charges of attempted murder, murder, and felon in possession of a handgun. According to Brookins’ attorney, he was defending himself. According to an affidavit, the incident is captured on camera.

Battie transferred to Auburn from South Florida, where he was a consensus All-American kick returner in 2021. He returned kicks for the Tigers in 2023 and ranked fourth in the SEC with a 23.0 yards per kickoff return. Battie also rushed for 227 yards and a touchdown.
