Arkansas basketball made another surprise addition to the 2024-25 roster on Wednesday morning as 2024 guard Casmir Chavis announced his commitment to the Razorbacks. Sources indicate the Minneapolis, MN native is going to be a scholarship addition to the roster for this season.

The 6-2, 180-pound guard is a three-star prospect in the 2024 class and originally committed and signed to play for Washington in November of 2023. Following the dismissal of head coach Mike Hopkins after the 2023-24 season, Chavis decommitted from the Huskies and was released from his letter of intent.

According to 247Sports, Chavis is the No. 164 overall player in the 2024 class, No. 20 combo guard and No. 6 player from the state of Minnesota. He’s graded as a 0.9052 three-star prospect in the industry-generated Composite Rankings.

Chavis joins an already-impressive freshman class in Fayetteville headlined by Boogie FlandKarter Knox and Billy Richmond. Those three commits together ranked No. 6 overall in the country, per 247Sports. John Calipari now has five incoming freshman including Chavis and Jaden Karuletwa to go along with Fland, Knox and Richmond.

In addition to joining the 6th-ranked freshman class, Chavis joins a roster that includes the top-ranked transfer portal haul in the country. Calipari brought in the No. 1 transfer group headlined by Johnell DavisJonas AidooDJ WagnerAdou Thiero and Zvonimir Ivisic.

What makes this year’s roster notable, aside from it being Calipari’s first at Arkansas, is the change in his philosophy. Calipari has spoken candidly about his new roster-building philosophy multiple times throughout this offseason.

“I want to have eight or nine guys on scholarship and NIL,” Calipari said recently. “I want other guys on scholarship, but you have to understand that you have to work your way, you have to earn your way. You’re on scholarship, you’re getting all that goes along with it, but you know what your role is on this team.”
