REPORT: The Dallas Cowboys Surface As Favorites To Sign Super Bowl Champion; 2X Pro Bowler
The Dallas Cowboys have had an eventful 2024 off-season so far to say the least. A number of recent free agent signings have taken headlines recently, however, all eyes are still on the pending Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb extensions.
That being said, Dallas could very well add even more depth and experience on their defense.
The Dallas Cowboys Named Top Spot For 35-Year-Old Super Bowl Champion
According to the NFL Scouting Department at Bleacher Report, the Cowboys are the best landing spot for veteran DT Linval Joseph:
Add Now: DT Linval Joseph
While Mazi Smith had a solid performance in the Cowboys’ first preseason game, he’s coming off a disappointing rookie year. Additionally, the defense is thin behind him, with rookie seventh-round pick Justin Rogers expected to serve as Smith’s backup.
Joseph, who played for defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer in Minnesota, would provide a veteran insurance policy at nose tackle. Also, the 35-year-old could help improve Dallas’ run defense, which was one of the team’s biggest issues down the stretch of last season.
Granted, recently acquired Jordan Phillips (6’6″ and 341 pounds) has the size to fill this role, but he has primarily lined up in the B-gap as a 3-technique throughout his career.
Due to injuries, Joseph has bounced around the last few years. Depending on his health, he could be a valuable player for the Cowboys inside. For a man 6’6″ and 340 pounds, Jordan Phillips has excellent athletic ability, making him capable of playing in all lineups. If Joseph is added, Dallas will have another anchor inside that can help a lot in run situations and give their rotation more options. He can even play alongside Mazi Smith and give Osa Odighizuwa a break if needed.
Another reason to pursue this move is that Joseph won’t cost the Cowboys much. It is true that the Cowboys have improved their defensive front, but Zimmer said they need more “noses” as in plural. Assuring the middle of the defense for at least 2024 could mean Joseph’s addition to the team.
