Miami landed its first commit of its 2025 recruiting class on Friday afternoon, as local Sagemont Prep (Fla.) shooting guard Matthew Able announced his pledge to the Hurricanes on the 247Sports YouTube channel. He chose Miami over finalists Wake ForestNorthwesternBaylorBoston CollegeXavierMichigan and Virginia Tech.

Able, who is an athletic 6-foot-5 and 190-pound guard, was one of this summer’s fastest-rising prospects after having a breakout grassroots season with Austin Rivers SE Elite on the 3SSB Circuit. In the latest 2025 player rankings, Able rose from being the No. 227 overall player in the country to No. 64. He is also ranked as the 14th-best shooting guard in the country.

Able is a talented athlete and a smart slasher. He’s an impressive shot-maker but doesn’t always have to have the ball in his hands to make an impact. His commitment to Miami marks the second straight recruiting cycle that the Hurricanes have landed a top-100 player.

UM got involved in Able’s recruitment this summer and quickly became a contender. He took an official visit to Miami last week after taking visits to Wake Forest and Northwestern before that. Hurricanes associate head coach Bill Courtney was Able’s primary recruiter.

Leading up to his UM visit, Miami’s coaches pitched Able on a message that was centered around the Hurricanes’ recent track history of sending guards to the NBA.

“Something that they kind of talked about is their development of guards and the elite guards that they’ve had,” Able told InsideTheU in July. “They’ve had, I believe they told me, three guards in the league in the last two years, which is extremely impressive. That was a big thing they talked about. And of course, a lot of people know Jalil Bethea. He’s a player that plays like me, similar build, a really good guard with a great feel for the game. [He] can score, and they kind of see me playing like him, something like that because Jalil is projected to be kind of a one-and-done. They told me that they see me as something along those lines, like Jalil. Just a scoring guard that can guard a lot of positions and is just a great teammate as well.”

Able’s commitment to Miami creates momentum for the Hurricanes as they enter a critical stretch in which they will be welcoming several four-star prospects on official visits over the next few weeks, as well as Cameron Boozer and Cayden Boozer on unofficial visits.

Here’s what 247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein wrote in a recent evaluation of Able:

“Able is a well-built wing with broad shoulders and a very sturdy frame that is only going to keep filling out. He has somewhat unorthodox mechanics for someone who makes threes in bunches, with just a slight hop into a noticeable twisting motion, but nevertheless a fluid release and soft ball. While the jumper looked like the first domino in his attack, he showed the versatility to also make mid-range shots off the dribble and solid athleticism in the open floor. The other thing that was very noteworthy, was Able’s excellent left hand. He was equally comfortable, not just putting the ball on the floor to both sides, but even dunking with both hands. He also showed good perimeter footwork off the catch and was a competitive defender.”
