Veteran defensive tackle from Auburn joins Arizona Cardinals
Last season, the Baltimore Ravens released Angelo Blackson as they reduced their preseason roster to the regular-season limit. The former Auburn defensive tackle still played in 11 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023.
On Aug. 26, the Denver Broncos released Blackson as they reduced their preseason roster to the regular-season limit. And as with last season, getting cut might not keep Blackson from playing in the NFL in 2024.
On Tuesday, the Arizona Cardinals signed Blackson for their practice squad. Players on the practice squad can become eligible to play if elevated to active status the day before games. Each team is allowed to elevate two practice-squad players to active status for each game.
This will be Blackson’s second stint with the Cardinals. The defensive lineman played in 16 games, made nine starts and matched his career high with 2.5 sacks for Arizona in 2020.
The Cardinals lost their 2024 season-opener to the Buffalo Bills 34-28 on Sunday. Arizona opens its home season against the Los Angeles Rams in an NFC West game at 3:05 p.m. CDT Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
A fourth-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2015, Blackson has played for five NFL teams.
After two seasons with the Titans, Blackson was on the New England Patriots’ practice squad when the Houston Texans signed him for the final nine games of the 2017 season.
Blackson played in every game in 2018 and started 15 regular-season and two playoff games in 2019, but the Texans still released him at the end of the preseason in 2020.
Blackson signed with the Cardinals five days before the 2020 season kicked off and still played in every Arizona game.
Blackson signed a two-year, $5.5 million contract with the Chicago Bears in 2021 as a free agent.
After 32 games and 12 starts with Chicago in two seasons, Blackson signed with the Ravens for the 2023 campaign. But Baltimore released Blackson on Aug. 29, 2023. Two days, later he joined Jacksonville.
Blackson signed a one-year contract with the Broncos on April 15.
In 128 NFL regular-season games, with 42 starts, Blackson has 179 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 17 tackles for loss, 27 quarterback hits, one interception, eight pass breakups, one forced fumble and four fumble recoveries. Blackson has played in three postseason games.
